  • Click on "Create Application"
  • Applications available to be created
  • Click on "Create" to select a Funding Opportunity
  • Click on "Select" to move from the NOI phase to the application phase
  • Application starts with the eligibility profile
Chapter 2

  • Click "Edit" to modify your application
  • Click "Module Status" to view all of the modules of the application
  • To edit a specific part of your application click on the Module Name
  • Click "Show Table of Contents" to view application modules
  • To skip to another module click the module name in the Table of Contents
  • Click "Hide Table of Contents" to return to current module
  • Select "Export application and attachments to PDF" to download and preview your application
  • Click to edit the attachment
  • Click to delete the attachment
  • Click to delete the application
  • Once the application is deleted, you will be returned to the home page
Chapter 3
  • Consult the Eligibility Criteria - For Faculty before starting
  • Close window
  • Select the appropriate current or future academic appointment in an eligible Canadian postsecondary institution
  • For future academic appointment, indicate the start date.
  • Validating your application will indicate if all the required fields have been filled out
  • Errors will appear at the top of the screen
  • Select title of the position that makes you eligible to apply or type the title
  • Select the institution of your eligible position
  • Select the department of your eligible position
  • Some elements might be prefilled based on the academic position selected
  • If position is a term or contract, indicate the dates of the term or contract
  • Term must be at least 3 years to be eligible to apply
  • Select Not Applicable if one of the statement is Yes and the other is No
  • Click to validate
  • Click "Continue and Create Application"
  • Your application has been created
  • Click "Open" to begin your application
Chapter 4
  • Click "Edit" to modify your application
  • Information will be prepopulated from the Notification of Intent
  • Areas greyed out cannot be modified
  • Click "Save and validate" or "Save and next" to proceed
Chapter 5

The summary is intended to explain the proposal in language that the public can understand.

Using simple terms, briefly describe the nature of the work to be done. Indicate why and to whom the research is important, the anticipated outcomes and how the research field and Canada will benefit.

This plain language summary will be available to the public if your proposal is funded.

Chapter 6
  • Enter your proposed budget for the 5 years of the Discovery Grants program
  • Select types of students as necessary
  • For each type, enter the number of students to be supported
  • Enter the total amount required to support this type of students
  • Repeat for the required years
  • If necessary, add a row to add a type of student
  • If necessary, add a row to add a type of student
  • Once validated, the totals will be calculated
  • Select the type of non-student as necessary
  • Enter the number of non-students
  • Enter the total amount for the type of non-student
  • Repeat for the required years
  • Select the type of expenses related to equipment and facilities
  • Include budget for each year necessary
  • Identify materials and supplies needed
  • Include budget for each year necessary
  • Select travel type as necessary
  • Include budget for each year necessary
  • Select dessimination costs as necessary
  • Include budget for each year necessary
  • Specify any other expenses as necessary

Chapter 7

Provide the following information:

  • Information on the conceptual and budgetary relationship or difference between this application and all other support currently held or applied for by the applicant and any of the co-applicants.
  • For each grant currently held or applied for by the applicant and any of the co-applicants, clearly describe the main objective and provide a brief outline of the methodology, budget details, and details on the support of highly qualified personnel.
  • Explain the relationship to other sources of support

Chapter 8

Describe the projects that are appropriate for Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP) training, and discuss the pertinence of the training plans for the research program and involvement of trainees in individual projects. Explain the expected outcomes in terms of contribution to knowledge, and the training value of the proposed projects. Provide justification if limited training plans are provided.

Provide details on the planned contributions to training in a co-supervisory or collaborative context, if appropriate.

Chapter 9
  • Clarify your contributions to training of HQP over the last six (6) years.
  • You should discuss your most important contributions to training (i.e., aggregate data on a particular group of trainees), training in particularly important or challenging areas of research, specialized methodologies and techniques, interdisciplinary or industrial collaborations, as well as the lack of recent contribution to training. You should also discuss your role in co-supervision of your HQP (if applicable).
  • Training supported by NSERC ranges from undergraduate theses and summer projects to postdoctoral levels, and includes technical and other research personnel.
  • Describe your past contributions to the training of Highly Qualified Personnel

Chapter 10
  • List up to five (5) of your most significant contributions to research and/or to practical applications over the last six (6) years. Contributions made more than six (6) years ago but for which the impact is being felt now (e.g., exploitation of patent, inclusion in a code, etc.) may be included.
  • For each, describe the significance in terms of influence on the direction of thought and activity in the target community and in terms of significance to, and use by, other researchers and end users. For collaborative contributions, describe your role.
  • A contribution does not have to be a single publication or report. For example, a group of publications on a specific subject could be discussed as one contribution.
  • Note that you may include the full reference to your contributions or provide the appropriate reference to your NSERC CCV.
  • Describe your most significant research contributions

Chapter 11

Provide details, as appropriate, on the contributions listed in your NSERC CCV. Such details may include:

  • the nature of collaborations with other researchers;
  • the rationale or practice used for:
  • the order of authors in the publications listed, and
  • the inclusion of students in the list of authors;
  • your role in joint publications;
  • the reason for selecting certain venues (journals, conferences) for publications, particular features of the venues, e.g., target audiences, review procedures;
  • the impact or potential impact of patents and technology transfer;
  • the nature of industrially relevant R&D activities;
  • the significance of technical reports;
  • attestation to the nature and the significance of confidential technical and internal reports; and
  • original research reported in books or technical reports.

You may include other activities or information to help committees to evaluate your contributions to and impact on science and engineering, including interdisciplinary research.

  • Keywords will be pre-populated from the NOI and can be modified

Chapter 13
  • Navigate to the Attachments section
  • Click "Upload" to include an attachment
  • Type the title of your attachment
  • Click "Browse" to select your attachment
  • Select your file
  • Click "Upload" to attach your file
  • Click to return to Application Overview
  • Attachment uploaded
  • Click "Upload" to repeat the process
Chapter 14
  • Once you have logged in, select “Funding” from the “CV” drop down menu located in the top menu bar.
  • Select the Funding Source.
  • Select the CV Type.
  • Click “Load”
  • Once you have completed the NSERC CCV, click “Submit”.
  • A confirmation number will automatically be provided onscreen after you agree to the consent statement.
  • Click “History” to view your submission history and preview your CCV in PDF format.
Chapter 15
  • Click “Attach”
  • Refer to the NSERC CCV instructions for information on completing and attaching your CCV.
  • Enter your NSERC CCV confirmation number.
  • Click “Upload”
Chapter 16
  • Once your application is completed and validated, you can submit to the university
  • Click to submit your application to the university
  • Read the Terms and Conditions before consenting
  • Click "I accept" to proceed
  • Click to return to the Home Page
  • Message confirms that it has been submitted to the university
