Supplements for NSERC PDF holders

In accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding between NSERC and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), first signed in 1987 and renewed in 1995, both agencies have agreed to launch a three-year pilot initiative focused on postdoctoral fellows.

Through the initiative and on a competitive basis, NSERC will award up to 10 supplements of $10,000 per year for two years to successful PDF applicants who specified the People’s Republic of China as a location of tenure for the award. Note: For the purpose of this supplement, tenure will be restricted to “mainland” China, excluding Hong Kong and Macau. The terms “People’s Republic of China” and “China” are used interchangeably.

Additionally, NSFC will provide funding of approximately $35,000 for research expenses to eligible professors in China who host an NSERC postdoctoral fellow.

What is the purpose of the supplement?

These awards are intended to:

  • facilitate the movement of Canadian postdoctoral fellows to China; and
  • provide support to postdoctoral fellows and researchers in both countries to travel and participate in international collaborations.

Are you eligible to hold a supplement?

To hold this supplement, you must:

  • be awarded an NSERC PDF; and
  • take up the award in China.

What kind of support do these supplements provide?

Up to 10 awards of $10,000 per year for two years will be made available to successful applicants who take up their award in China. The funds are to be used by the recipients to offset relocation costs and living expenses.

How do you apply?

Applicants should indicate their interest in a location of tenure in China in their PDF application. Following the results of the competition, winners who had not previously indicated their interest in China may do so no later than September 1. All applicants to the PDF competition who indicate a location of tenure in China will be considered for the supplements; however, the supplements will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

NSERC will identify the winners based on the review by its scholarships and fellowships selection committees.

Notification of decision

NSERC will notify recipients of these supplements following the activation of their PDF.
