NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Heavy Load, Climate and Pavement Interaction

Chair program

Industrial Research Chairs program

Senior Chairholder since 2008

Transportation infrastructures play an important role in Canada’s social and economic development. Climate factors, and the repeated passing of heavy loads, are generally considered the two major causes of the deterioration of this heritage.

The proposed research is aimed at improving the quality and sustainability of our infrastructures, as well as the effectiveness of the transportation industry. The main objective of the chair is to create knowledge and tools for controlling the structural and functional performance of pavements used by heavy vehicles in the context of the Canadian climate.

The proposed program is divided into three research themes: 1) the behaviour of pavement materials and structures; 2) controlling the performance of pavements; and 3) pavement surface characteristics that affect the behaviour and performance of vehicles on the pavements.

The research program stems from work done by the chairholder over the past ten years, essentially on the action of traffic and climate on pavements. The research program will make it possible to develop characterization, design and modelling tools that will facilitate management of these infrastructures in the Canadian context. The chair will draw on the expertise of a number of partners associated with the trucking industry. The partners will be able to apply to their area of expertise the technological progress resulting from the research program of the chair.
