Sophie LaRochelle

Sophie LaRochelle

Dr. Sophie LaRochelle (Ph.D. Optics, the University of Arizona; M.Sc. Physics, Université Laval) is the Director of the Centre for Optics, Photonics and Lasers (COPL) at the Université Laval. She is also a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Université Laval, and the Holder of the Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Advanced Photonics Technologies for Communications. Previously, she worked as a Defense Scientist at Defence Research and Development Canada – Valcartier.

Dr. LaRochelle has more than 20 years of experience in fibre optics propagation and components, fibre optics communications, fibre Bragg gratings and their applications, and other related fields. She has had 170 of her papers published in peer-reviewed journals and has presented over 240 papers at prestigious conferences such as the Optical Fiber Communications Conference.

Presently, she is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a Fellow of the Optical Society of America, and a member of the Ordre de ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ). From 2010 to 2013 she served on the committee advising Quebec’s Minister for Economic Development, Innovation and Exports on the province’s review of its policy on investment in research and innovation. Dr. LaRochelle has also served on the Board of Directors of CMC Microsystems and on various technical committees and award-selection committees. She has been awarded numerous research grants and contracts and has established partnerships with many laboratories both in Canada and abroad. Over the course of her career, Dr. LaRochelle has supervised and co-supervised 50 master’s and doctoral students and 20 post-doctoral fellows.

Dr. LaRochelle is a member of NSERC's Executive Committee and the Committee on Research Partnerships.
